Weekend Links - New Kids On The Block Edition

On Friday, I took one for the team and went with my wife to the New Kids on The Block Edition. Normally, I wouldn’t mind too much, but I had to give up seeing the end of the Red Sox playoff game. When you watch something around 120 regular season games, you kind [...]

Boating Accident (and some links)

I was in a boating accident today (not boats colliding as much as my own lack of coordination). I feel good, just 18 stitches to the eyebrow. I haven’t seen it, but some people say it was bad. I know there was a lot of blood, but I feel the same as [...]

Links - Looks can be Deceiving Edition

I’m still away on my vacation. We’ve had a little lot of trouble trying to get on the free military cargo flights that we were told were “typically very, very easy, but nothing is guaranteed.” It seems like there’s some value to a guarantee.
While we were on vacation, we got a little sucked [...]

Are You Going to be Lazy Man and Money’s 500,000th Visitor?

In the next couple of hours, my Sitemeter visitor tracking will show that I’ll have my 500,000 visitor to Lazy Man and Money. Google Analytics shows there have been visitors from 197 countries - many that I’ve never heard of. Sadly, unlike the guy in the Bud Dry commercial, the Congo is one [...]

Ten Things I Think I Think (and Some Links)

With apologies to Peter King, I’m going to borrow his shtick for this round-up.

I think watching fewer than ten seconds of Usain Bolt was every bit as amazing as anything that I’ve seen in the Olympics thus far. That includes two of Phelps medals by the narrowest of margins. To see him slow [...]

Gordon Ramsay at the London Review (and some weekend links)

Would Gordon Ramsay eat at his own Restaurant. I think not.
A couple of weeks ago, I followed my wife on a work trip to Los Angeles. I had never been, but with my Celtic’s Beat L.A. shirt packed, I was ready for adventure. It wasn’t nearly what I thought it was. Where we were staying (Omni Hotel), there was almost no one. If a lot of people lived in LA, it wasn’t the part of the town we were in. Anyway, while there, we went to three restaurants with price tags that I’d say [...]

Weekend Links - Lonely Mickey Mouse Edition

My wife and I went to Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago and spent a little time in Disneyland. One of the most interesting things I saw was a High School Musical 2 stage that was on wheels. It would come rolling through the park 2-3 times a day and put on a 30-45 minute show at the front of the park. A group of teenagers/young adults would jump off the stage and perform songs from High School Musical. It’s all very good, and it was a fine show.
As my wife was grooving along to [...]

Weekend Links - I Want a Volkswagen Bus edition

Today, my wife and I drove 7 hours from nearly San Deigo back to our home in San Francisco. It got me thinking about the road trip in little Miss Sunshine where they take a Volkswagen Bus. If it weren’t for the gas prices it would be fun to own a Volkswagen Bus. I’m not the only one who thinks so though.
Steve Speirs, the guy behind the the hundred pushups phenomenon really wants a VW Bus. He’s trying to pull an Alex Tew, who started the Million Dollar Homepage. What makes this different? It’s [...]

Reflections on Red Sox - Yankees (and some weekend links)

This weekend the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees are getting together for another of their classic matches. (Having lived 8 miles west of Boston for 95% of my life, I fall heavily in that Red Sox fan club.) Though the Tampa Bay Devils (they choose to drop the Devil name, I choose to drop Rays) will probably take a playoff spot this year, it still feels like old times with the rivalry between Boston and New York as strong as ever.
Fans (including myself) often take the rivalry too seriously. You go to a game [...]

I Can Ride My Bike With Handlebars (and weekend links)

Like almost all of my weekend posts, I try to highlight something that’s not necessarily related to personal finance. Maybe it’s a small detail of something that’s going on my life. Earlier this week, I was driving to the store to do some shopping and I heard an unusual song. It caught my attention because I would categorize it as rap, but I don’t listen to channels that typically play rap. Perhaps it’s a lot like one of favorite bands, Cake.
I went home and found the the video on YouTube. I showed it to my [...]

Links: Is Waldo and Harry Potter The Same Person?

Ever notice that Where’s Waldo and Harry Potter had striking similarities? Both characters were created by British authors, (Waldo is actually the US version of the original Wally). Both were featured in children’s books, but had their audience to adults expand to a point where they had sold billions of copies and lead to spin-offs of video games, magazines, dolls, and toys. They both pull of the nerdy glasses quite well. They have a signature striped piece of clothing, Waldo with his shirt and Harry with his scarf. They are never too far away from [...]

Thursday Blogger Shout-outs

I’m going to try something a little new and interesting this week. I thought I’d give a shout out to some bloggers and their articles that I find noteworthy. There are a lot of great personal finance articles, but this takes it a step beyond to the level of garnering a small amount of fame.
I’d like to give a shout out to Joseph Sangl for his appearance in Money Magazine. I’m just egotistical enough to claim that I’m probably the only person to review his book Joseph Sangl : I Was Broke, Now I’m Not and I [...]

Celtics and Oprah (and some weekend links)

This is an interesting weekend for me. I’m very excited about two events tomorrow. In the morning, I get to watch one of my wife’s friends get her doctorate from Stanford… followed by a graduation speech from Oprah. It’s kind of sad that I’m not really interested in her for any reason other than she’s Oprah. I’m not exactly a fan.
After I’m done with Oprah, I have to hop on the Celtics’ bandwagon and root with some friends at a bar. I didn’t think I’d find basketball interesting ever again, but between Pierce coming back [...]

Went to NBA Finals (and weekend links)

This past Thursday, I was reminded of the power of social capital. A friend of mine contacted another friend (who works for the Celtics) on my behalf to score tickets to last Thursday’s game. I’m the type of person who won’t bug a movie star for an autograph. Even though I am fairly close with both friends, I just didn’t feel comfortable asking since I was sure that he had a billion other friends who would love to go. I’d like to take a minute and thank both friends.

Weekend Links: Game Seven Edition

It’s game seven time in Boston and I can’t imagine the atmosphere. I personally stopped watching the Celtics when legends retired (Bird, Parish, McHale, etc.) and the new stars literally died (Reggie Lewis, Len Bias). The team philosophy for a number of years seemed to be to try to stay .500. This year, I’ve started watching a little more basketball - about 10 games compared to the 72 I used to watch. Yes, I’m a fair-weather fan, but I think it’s reasonable considering the circumstances. So let’s dedicate this set of links to the Boston [...]

Weekend Links: Harry’s Hofbrau Edition

A couple of weeks ago, a friend turned me onto Harry’s Hofbrau a local chain of restaurants. It turns out that in San Francisco “Hofbrau” means more of a carvery. It might somewhat similar to a more upscale version of Boston Market. It’s a little like a cafeteria where you just go down the line and construct your meal from all the options in front of you.
