Paying $1.84 for gas today reminded me that I wanted to revisit my analysis of Chrysler’s Let’s Refuel America Program and MyGallons.com.
Back in May, I discussed why Chrysler’s program was such a bad deal. As a reminder, the program allowed participants to lock in the ultra low price of $2.99 per gallon for three years. [...]

Can a book about lowering your financial expectations be any good? We were intrigued by the premise of this book and decided to give it a try. It was a bit surprising in some places, and a little disappointing in others, but overall it was a very interesting read that we found to be thought [...]

As Hurricane Ike took aim for the Gulf Coast, the financial markets reacted much in the way that they were expected to. Gas prices jumped to $5 a gallon along the gulf coast, and many expected the price jump to go nationwide, particularly if the hurricane caused damage to any offshore oil rigs. Since the [...]

I might not have mentioned it, but I’m in Los Angeles this week, staying at a swanky hotel called The Omni. (I’ll tell you more about it after my stay, but it’s essentially free.) They dropped off a copy of USA Today yesterday and for the first in months, I read a physical newspaper. It’s a general interest newspaper, but the front page seem dominated by financial concerns. There is a “Nation’s gas gauge” in the top left showing how much the price of gas has changed in the last day and the price a year [...]

MyGallons.com is a new service that allows you to prepay for gasoline, “locking in today’s prices.” As more an more people come to the seemingly inevitable conclusion that gas prices can only continue to rise, it’s no surprise that a company came along to take advantage of this line of thinking. I seem [...]

Like almost all of my weekend posts, I try to highlight something that’s not necessarily related to personal finance. Maybe it’s a small detail of something that’s going on my life. Earlier this week, I was driving to the store to do some shopping and I heard an unusual song. It caught my attention because I would categorize it as rap, but I don’t listen to channels that typically play rap. Perhaps it’s a lot like one of favorite bands, Cake.
I went home and found the the video on YouTube. I showed it to my [...]

Memorial Day weekend is over… *Sigh*… back to work. The local news last night interviewed a number of people about how they spent their Memorial Day weekend. I was surprised by the number that were really cutting down their driving to save money on gas. One family decided to cut down their vacations from 3 to 1.
My wife and I don’t drive very much for vacations. We might go 45 miles north to Napa for some wine tasting this summer. When/If we do, we’ll hopefully find a cheap motel or perhaps even camp out. [...]
